The gluteus maximus is also a main muscle used in many sports such as volleyball, hockey, basketball, soccer, and football. Plus just everyday uses like squatting, lifting and keeping your upper and lower body upright and aligned.

The buttocks allow primates to sit upright without needing to rest their weight on their feet as four-legged animals do.

The gluteus maximus is the largest and closest to the skin of the three gluteal muscles. It makes up a large portion of the shape and appearance of the buttocks.

The buttocks are formed by the masses of the gluteal muscles or 'glutes' (the gluteus maximus and the gluteus medius) superimposed by a layer of fat.

Its large size is one of the most characteristic features of the muscular system in humans, connected as it is with the power of maintaining the trunk in the erect posture.

The gluteus maximus is is keeping balance between the upper body and the lower body. Between the body being tied into the gluteals, it can effect your shoulder alignment, arm flexibility or how you walk.
